Yo Internet, how's it hangin?
I haven't been drawing much and by "much" I mean "at all" but I have been slowly been chipping away at this cat puppet which you've probly already looked at by now. I was gonna keep it a little bit secrety and then do the big reveal but am posting these so you got somethin to look at. I'll draw more hot nekkid bitchez to make it up to you, I promiss.
I was also gonna keep it a secret he's gonna have an eyepatch but there ya go. I'm letting the cat out of the bag here, so to speak.
What's that ad campaign that ran the guy with the eyepatch? Y'know the guy they copied for Harvey Birdman; Attorney at law. I'm gonna use my little powerful magnets to hold the eyepatch in place cause the ellastic string I got will probly shift around too much. I'm gonna stich the eye area up so it's looks like a scar.

I need to come up with a name for him eventually. Somethin like 'Jimmy Boots'. He's gonna be a sorta alley cat. I'm thinkin 'Tommy the cat' by Primus, Top Cat if he was a back alley fighter, general shifty character that hangs around at the docks, and 'annoying junkie that asks for a dollar or two at the bus station and bums a cigarette as he leaves'.

It's all just mocked up to check general placement. The inside of the ear is gonna be white fur. Still a long way off.
Been making quick little paper towel template-patterned pieces and making sure the piece is the right way with the direction of the fur before cutting it out. Didn't have to worry about fur direction with the long red stuff.

I was worried he'd look like a fox. Luckily triangular ears and nose are universally "kitty".

The head was a tight little foam sculpt I literally had lying around. The jaw was long gone, so I added one, padded out jowels and sculpted the front to be a little more cat-like.
The nose was a black teddy bear eye I carved up with a hot blade combining my love of fire, knives and sculpting. The teeth were gonna be claws for a monster plushie I was gonna make, and the eye is one of the knobby bits on the bottom of a plastic bottle I loosened up with heat and just kinda shaped into a cat eye. At one point I considered taxidermy eyes but meh, hand made looks more plushie.

I think I'll make legs for this one cause he's gonna be small and would look better sitting on things instead of behind. I'm gonna try to make a tail for him but if I can't make it sit up and curl like I want cause of the weight of it, I'll make him tail-less.

With each puppet now my confidence grows. I can generally picture the end product and it's not terribly hard work, just painstakingly slow and tedious. My sewing still sucks though.

That's all really.

In other news, I finally saw 'Monsters Versus Aliens' and although small in scope [there's like what, 6 scenes in the whole thing] and it's way too short, there were some decent jokes, fun romp, great music, punchy and moves along nicely. A decent Dreamworks movie? Well suck me dry and call me dusty.
Luckily there weren't many quiet, slow paced scenes, which are way too animated. It's like every characters in a dreamworks movie has parkinsons. But anyway, it's good enough to distract me from how much I dislike CG movies. Wish I had seen it in 3D though.

Seriously, is Han Solo the only character who didn't get some stupid interwoven backstory in the new movies?
I feel bad for Boba Fett, ruined with such a stupid backstory, in the new movies. He went from 'Quiet, Cool, Badass character' to 'a New Zealander'. Then again R2-D2 could fly. Was it ever explained in any of them why he later couldn't?

I think Twilight is a pretty cool guy. He's a Dracula who loves a teenage girl, plays baseball and doesn't affraid of anything.

I was watching the old disney animated Robin Hood on tv one day and forgot how beautifully animated those old disney movies were. It was one of the movies I rented as a kid everytime. Shame the directing in them in sucked balls.

Cause sometimes you just wanna draw big plump, happy, confident women.

I look at a lot of naked models on DeviantArt. probly not a shock to anyone.

Speaking of poor likenesses, the one on the left was supposed to be a celebrity crush of mine, but I just can't draw her accurately to save my life. It looks like a vague, police profiler sketch. She IS guilty of a crime.. Magically stealing my heart. ~sigh~ There's a clue as to who she is.

I have no sympathy for people whose inner thighs don't rub together.

Left over from the last post. I have a soft spot for Track T hot rods.
Also just to show how messy, sketchy and unsure my penciling really is.

I think it was Becky Cloonan who did an adorable little selfportrait that looked fun, so I totally ripped her off.
Beard's already grown out making this even more innacurate. I wish I was this cute..but certainly do look that angry when I'm alone.

saw this on a page and it was just the bold lines and I was holding a felt tip, so I added some detail.

Just doodling with a pen. Drew her face, got carried away.

Well, after much slow progress, he's finally completed. Very minor things to do here and there, but he's essentially finished.
I still have enough fake fur to make another one. It's crappy fur though. I need to invest in the more expensive furs for my next endeavor.

This is original Gerald in his current state, and how he looked when I first completed his head.
This is why I needed to replace him. I would just throw him on my bedroom floor and would have to pick things out of his fur when I'd go to make a video with him. He was my second puppet, so I didn't know the effect it would have on his cheap fur. It's really obvious I trimmed his hair at one point too. I'm not gonna make that mistake with Gerald II.

There is some debate among muppet fans as to whether muppets should be updated. Jim Henson would say so long as the character maintains the same, the appearance doesn't matter. I used to disagree, and thought they should try as hard as possible to maintain the look, but as a puppet maker now, I can see the want and need to update a puppet and improving it with more knowledge as time goes on. You need only look at modern miss piggy and the first miss piggy to know there were advances in how to make them better.

I didn't go with the foam body I made for him because it made him look fat, but the fur was done using the same wedges pattern and it holds the shape ok enough. The fur adds a lot of girth so without the foam body it evens out the size I wanted. His T-shirts look right now. He looked bloated with the body. I may trim his arm fur a bit though.

I'm most proud oh his new eyeblink mech, and those hands. I made his hands properly and wanted a material to show them off more, instead of covering them with fur again. They were just furry clumps and his fingers weren't distinguishable, but this looks way better. I ended up using the same fleecey material I used for the eyes, but used the other side to hide the seams.
Coupled with removable arm rods, he'll now be able to do the muppet microphone hold. :D

This whole exercise to improve my Gerald puppet, but next time I wanna do something less muppetey looking.

This is the kind of puppet I wanted to own since I was a kid. Professional, furry, big eyes, round head, no nose.
I had this idea for a sesame street style show, but for adults, but then Avenue Q came along years later. I had this idea for two silly puppets that would sit on the gutter and just sip coke bottle, and laugh at everything, wearing flannel shirts and baseball caps. Ok, so as a teen I wasn't very imaginative, but this is some kinda evolution of that idea.

My dream is to do a cop show with puppets. The puppets would be the detectives in charge of 'character crimes'. Sort of a cross between Greg the Bunny and Hawaii Five-0. Oh, and have a puppet famous and funny enough to be a guest star on Good News week.

All glued in and pretty much good to go for the fur.

I wanna use felt dots for pupils like real muppets so I gotta track some down. Left enough gap between the eyelid and ping pong ball to allow it. If need be I can use electrical tape like this.
I keep forgetting how small his head is. Having small hands means that's one advantage I can take, making puppets as small and cute as I can. It'll look slightly bigger than it actually is because of the fur anyway though.
So glad I made the proper handgrips for it and covered it with leather. Very comfy. The ring for the blink is a little bit awkward to use to fully close, but I won't be using it much for that. I just like having the option. For just slight expression changes it works fine.

I'll probly get impatient and cover it with fur next to see how the head will look, but I should probly make the hands, arms and body next.
Still not sure what to do for the hands. I don't want to cover them with fur cause all my work making the fingers won't be seen and they'll just look like furry mittens but can't afford or justify buying antron fleece just for that little an area. I need something cheap and small that will hide the seam around the fingers. Suggestions appreciated from you Crafties.

Already thinking about future puppets. I wanna make a cat next. Sculpt the head out of foam to get the features right, and maybe give him a patch too, cause I like cats with eye patches for some reason. Promissed myself I wouldn't dick around with mechanisms again just yet, but there's my full eye movement mechanism that's needing to be finished and put to use in something.
A cat would look great with ear twitches... Hmmm.

It's friday night and instead of watching 'Sweet Home Alabama' for a thrid time on tv, I decided to make this out of masking tape.
I used to do this as a kid. You sweat it off, but I did it too tight and couldn't get my hand out.. It was at that point I realised it was a stupid thing to do. It's easier to sweat out of it if your palm is open.

Fun with lamp and shitty point and shoot camera.
Make your own firey explossion sound effects.

The only logical place to keep it.

I feel sorry for masking tape. It's sole purpose is to be used and thrown away. It's never gonna be used for anything important. It's purposely shitty and doesn't stick well. It's designed to fail. If I wanted to be wanky I could say "This piece of mine is a commentary on youth culture and how it surrounds itself with, and embraces the disposable.. Lives for 'The Here and Now. " ..or somethin..

If someone were to give me a hundred rolls of masking tape I'd be so fucken over the moon. Same goes for like, Foam. Give me a ton of foam and I'd be happy as a pig in shit.

Blink mechanism work in progress.
Took me about three or four attempts to get to this version. It works smoothly and comfortably now.

How it's gonna sit in the head.
I carved the head out of a solid piece of foam. Seems easier then patterning sheet foam.
You carve your head out, then slice it down the center and cut away the insides on both halves and glue em back together. This is how the original Miss Piggy was done before her head was done with a foam latex mold.
I also added some wire around the eye openings for some strength.

The actual moving eyelid edge is cut out from my old sketch book covers.I have so many old sketchbooks they're my source for stiff cardboard and thin black plastic.

Failed first attempt.
I was making the eyelid half a sphere which left me little room to attatch the eyeball. I could only have wire right at he bottom in the middle at the back there.
Because the eyes are on an angle outwards from each other, it's tricky getting the tabs, that are gonna lever the eyelids, right.
Gluing the thin wire into the eyelid was shit and they weren't moving the same with my mocked up lever, so it failed.

A failed operating system too. This was too wishy washy and wasn't moving right either. I pissed it off too.
I knew it had to see-saw somehow to properly lever the eyelids and I eventually settled on the version in the first photo. Changed it up and fixed a few problems that weren't obvious before.

The eyelids.
It's a stretchy material I found that's like a fleece but not fuzzy on the inside. Stretches in one direction, so I pulled it over some christmas borbells and used art fixative to stiffen it. Worked well. Holds it's shape nicely.
This will be glued over the black plastic moving bits on the eye.

I'm lucky I have some big dark blue leather offcuts I grabbed out of the bins at Riviera. I'm using it for the inside hand grips and stuff. Gonna be comfy. This puppet is gonna be so ergonomic and taylored to my tiny hands nobody else is ever gonna be abe to use it.

This is the stage I'm at, and I gotta be careful about the eyelids being glued on, and the whole mech glued into the head.That's probly the point of no return if I fuck it up... no saving it all there if it gets messed up. A new head might have to be made or something.

Then I gotta start work on the body and arms & hands/arm rods, then cover it all in fur.

I know this isn't as interesting to people as much as it is to me, but puppet makers just don't show this kinda thing and I felt like putting it out there.

This was a tiny little sketch about 5cms wide [1.9685 inches]
I was intentionally trying to draw somethin hip and T-shirty like. I don't know why I think a gorilla with a flat tyre seems hip.

This is how random my sketch book pages look. Just a mess of doodles of everything and anything.

I wish I could turn these into puppets.

Speaking of puppets, I'm redoing my Gerald puppet and I was just sketching possible changes.
I'll keep his mouth all black, but I'm now gonna give him a dark edge on his eyelids.. bit of a more muppet look.

This is a quick sketch I did of a dress I saw on tv.
Thought it looked pretty, so I got it down on paper cause I am forever scratching my head on what to draw girls wearing when I draw them.

I was trying to draw Justine from masterchef. I can't wait till ralph or zoo gets her to pose in a bikini.

Speaking of accurate likenesses and how bad I am at them, apologies to both Steph and Amie for these.

Ladies, if I were you, I'd hate Steph cause she sometimes thinks she's ugly. Not me though, I love steph, she's a peach. And fun to draw!!

And last but certainly not least, Amie. Hands down the coolest chick I have ever known.

I did these last two tonight cause I needed to warm up the ole mechanical pencil to get some proper stuff done and they were meant to be some rough sketches to get the arting flowing, got carried away like I always do, and now I'm just gonna go to bed cause I'm over it

Took me a little while to get a rough plot idea. I knew I wanted to have gratuitious sex and how to get to the third quarter..I'd worry about the end when I came to it. I try to think a page or two ahead but it got to a point where I was trying something as I was penciling.
At first I was thumbnailing then going to pencils on the page, but eventually I was quickly sketching out the page in my sketchbook, then lightboxing straight to inks on the page.
Visually it's not very interesting, but when I realiased it it had been two hours when I uploaded the first page, thoughts of detailed, artistic pages didn't last long.
I gotta learn how to scan properly.
My words to include were 'Approving', 'Promotion' and 'Motorway'.

This is my latest project, a meter wide drawing of the same girl from my last post.
I had energy to burn the other day and was rather enthused to start something big and this was all I could think of. Yeah, I know I have many an unfinished project already I could just as easily given some attention to instead of having them lying on my bedroom floor gathering dust, but shut up, I like starting things.

As you can see I used the grid method of scaling up a pic, so don't get too excited. Anyone can do this and it takes little artistic skill to do, so I'm not really proud of it at this stage.
I might change that forearm cause it looks weird without the carpet. Might sorta, flesh it out a bit. You can see my light sketching there. I thought about extending it out [her head elbow and thighs] seeing as that framing is how the photo is, but I like the cropping on it now. The photo feels filled out and intimate. I'm not too sure how to paint it though. I guess I should use a sealant on it at this stage then start layin down some paints. I suck with paint though, so I dunno why I thought this would be a good idea.
Thought maybe I could do it black + white + red. Gray tones for her skin, shirt and foreground floor, her hair's black and undies are black, and maybe red background just to make it pop?

Iunno, this will most likely be put on the backburner like everything else for now till I know what to do with it.

I got a few things I'm supposed to be doing.

I really did it this light for some reason. I can't be bothered colouring, so I just changed the Hue to make it seem more interisting.

Sketch idea for ye olde batman. I don't think it works but I like designing characters, regardless of my childish colouring in.

This is what a full page in my sketchbook looks like. Most of the time it's sparse with lots of failed sketches.
Headphones guy looks a lot like my brother and the red masked fellow is a character kicking around in my head I'm not sure whether to do anything with, or not cause it's kinda stoopid idea.

I have no interest in seeing the wolverine movie. Just don't care.
This is probly the first time, since I was a teen, that I've drawn deadpool.

I guess it should be "1 penny" right? I changed it when I though '2 pence' was overcharging.
This was gonna be a follow up to this one I did, but I can't colour it with my tablet still out of action.

Innacurate sketch I was doodling from memory. My apologies to hardcore He-Man fans.
As I was doing this, I thought "this is like, what skeletor would look like if he was in an animated cartoo..oh..Huuurrr. Derp"

I made some chain mail out of old lock washers, for no particular reason.

I found em in the garage and thought they could be used to make chain mail. They're a bit too small to connect in certain ways, like at one point this was in two halves and I went to join them long ways together side by side and I couldn't get my plyers in there to do it. So yeah, might see if there's bigger ones available... I'll be fucked if I'm gonna be coiling wire around something and cutting em with a hacksaw if this shit is readily available.

I was gonna make a neck peice but ran out and so this may just be my first test run.

Been a while since I posted drawings, so here's some recent sketches

Trudy and her awesome comic needs more regular lovin.

I dunno why, I just felt like drawing sonic. I don't think I've drawn him since I was like 10.

An unfinished batman I didn't wanna waste anymore graphite on.
In the Batman Begins making of, they talk about how they told Christian Bale to get as massive for the role and they told him to tone it down once they saw his bear like physique. I wish they'd kept him big. Seems more real to me. Looking more monstrous can't hurt batman's charactrer. He's supposed to be part wrestler, part boxer, part martial artist.

I never colour in my sketch book apart from a bit of red marker, but I still haven't gone to get a AAAA battery for my drawing tablet's pen, so no photoshoppin lately.
